Overview
Ready. Aim. Fire. traces the establishment of the U.S. Army's Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program, the pioneering effort to free soldiers from the battlefield liability of glasses. Through its founders and surgeons, the film follows how military medicine turned laser vision correction into a warfighter capability and the people who built it.
Director Statement
As a military surgeon, I trained at the leading edge of laser vision surgery, in a program with a history I knew only by reputation. It began decades before me, built by people whose names most of my own colleagues couldn't tell you, and in making this film I came to understand that history far more deeply than I ever had. As I prepared to leave the Army, I realized that institutional memory was leaving too, carried out the door by the people who built it as they retired.
I made this film because that history deserved to be recorded by someone who lived inside it. I am one of the last in a direct line to the people who started this work, and I wanted to put them on camera while I still could. Ready. Aim. Fire. is my attempt to honor that lineage: the surgeons, the soldiers, and the conviction that clear sight was worth fighting for.
